University receives awards for sustainable catering
Its latest accolade is the Food for Life Catering Mark Bronze Award, which recognises best practice regarding fresh, seasonal, healthy meals and sustainable sourcing, at Telford Innovation Campus. Only 33 universities hold the award and the criteria is very strict.
In addition, Wolverhampton has recently received the platinum Healthy City Award, in conjunction with the NHS and City Council, which recognises champions of healthy living who help people make the right food choices.
All campuses now have the Good Egg Award, celebrating companies that use cage-free eggs and products, from Compassion in World Farming.
Telford is among the first universities to have Marine Stewardship Accreditation for its responsible sourcing of fish produce. The Campus was also recently crowned winner of Venuemasters B&B challenge, an accommodation and catering scheme judged by fellow universities.
Amanda Shipley, Catering and Retail Operations Manager, said: “These awards are not easy to achieve and we are very proud of our catering teams for the work they put in.
“Environmental impact and responsible food sourcing is very important to us and where possible we offer Fairtrade options, as well as using local suppliers. We are very lucky in Telford, where a rural location enables us to benefit from quality local suppliers.”
Ethically sourced products are a familiar sight in all University catering outlets since it gained official Fairtrade status in 2008.
Fairtrade tea, coffee, bananas and chocolate are also all available – and Fairtrade wine has just been introduced to the hospitality wine list.
