Enjoy Fairtrade Fortnight with the University

27/02/2014

During Fairtrade fortnight, which started on Monday and runs until 8 March, the University is showing its support for the Make Bananas Fair campaign organised by the Fairtrade Foundation.

The University is selling Fairtrade Bananas at half price in its shops and catering outlets to promote the international effort to sell only fairly-traded bananas.

Fairtrade products have become a familiar sight throughout the University’s catering outlets since it gained official Fairtrade status in 2008. Staff, students and visitors to the University have been able to enjoy a wide range of Fairtrade products, consuming 363,867 cups of Fairtrade tea and coffee in 2013 alone.

Other Fairtrade favourites at the University include chocolate, with over 16,000 bars sold last year and Fairtrade fruit juice with sales exceeding 10,000 bottles.

The University is a member of the Wolverhampton City Fairtrade Partnership. This year the Partnership celebrates a decade of Fairtrade in the city after maintaining the honour for the 10th consecutive year.

Jon Elsmore, Dean of Students, said: “The University is a Fairtrade university in a Fairtrade city. One of our core values as an organisation is to be ethical and our commitment to Fairtrade is just one of the ways in which we demonstrate this.”

Volunteers from across the University can get involved with its Fairtrade Action Group, which the University runs jointly with the Students’ Union.

There will also be Fairtrade products on offer at the University’s Open Day on Saturday, 8 March at City and Walsall Campus.
