Union leads the way on supporting London 2012

23/11/2011

Wolverhampton is amongst 14 institutions to be awarded the ‘Be a Champion’ accreditation for London 2012.

UWSU was awarded the Silver Status accreditation by the National Union of Students’ (NUS) for its commitment and work towards getting students involved in the forthcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games.

UWSU are one of only three unions in the country to reach the Silver Standard so far.

The Union has held an Olympiad Day in April and recruited Be a Champion Student Ambassadors. They also plan to host a ‘mini Olympics’ on campus and other events inspired by London 2012.

UWSU President, Ken Harris, said: "This is a fantastic achievement for us and our members. It gives us a chance to celebrate and engage in the London 2012 Olympics by helping to create an exciting range of sporting activities and showcase our sporting success, and will help us to present more sport to more people."

Fiona Ellison, Programme Manager from the NUS, said: "The accreditation rewards and recognises the commitment and effort shown by students’ unions in creating an environment for Games inspired activity to flourish.

“Without support and guidance from students’ unions and the officers and staff that form their backbone, students wouldn’t be able to play such a role in London 2012 inspired activity."

The award will give UWSU access to even more support from the NUS for the programme and will enable more students to get involved as they move towards achieving Gold Status in time for the Games next summer.
