Boost for students and businesses with new placement scheme

23/05/2011

The Step Classic programme aims to provide the best opportunities for West Midlands students and graduates in the form of 12-week short-term paid projects, as well as providing training in project management and presentation skills.

The scheme also aims to help local businesses recruit recent graduates or current students for specific projects or as potential permanent staff.

Helene Turley, Employer Engagement Manager at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “We are excited to run Step as it not only enhances students and graduates work experience on their CV, it also supports local industry by giving organisations an extra pair of hands and to enable specialist projects within the company to take place.”

The organisation Step provides links with a variety of employers across a wide range of sectors, with organisations ranging from small businesses to multinational corporations. For 2011 the Step Classic programme will focus on engineering, science, design, marketing, research and information technology disciplines.

The scheme will provide students and graduates with beneficial work experience as well as the opportunity to build valuable connections in their chosen field of work. The University will also be running the Graduate Step and Step into Industry placement programmes.

Step was devised and launched by Shell UK in 1986. It was led and funded by Shell until 2009, with the support of Government departments and agencies across the UK.

The programme was successfully run at the University five years ago.
