Man to go on trial at health conference

01/06/2011

Health and social care staff will join School of Health and Wellbeing academics and students at the event on Thursday, 9 June 2011.

The Opportunities for Excellence in Health and Social Care will include a ‘mock trial’ in which Man stands accused of crimes against health, including grievous personal bodily harm against himself. Expert witnesses will provide evidence and act the roles of prosecutor and judge, with a jury deciding on Man’s guilt or innocence.

The expert witnesses will include Dr Steve Boorman, Chief Medical Advisor to Royal Mail Group and NHS Workforce Health and Wellbeing Lead Reviewer for the ‘Boorman Review’ report, published 2009.

The one-day conference will take place at the Millennium City Building at the Wolverhampton City Campus from 9am until 4.15pm.

The keynote speaker will be Professor Tony Hazell, Chair of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, who received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science from the University in April.

Professor Linda Lang, Dean of the School of Health and Wellbeing, said: “This event will allow us to explore ways of ensuring that health and social care service continue to impact positively upon health and wellbeing in the future.

“The Trial of Man will offer an interesting and evocative look at whether Man’s health problems are his own fault, or whether the fault lies with his genes or even with the health services.”

The conference is being held in memory of Professor Sam Ramaiah, Honorary Professor at the School of Health and Wellbeing and Director of Public Health at NHS Walsall from 1992 until 2010.

The event will be attended by health and social care staff, leaders, policy makers, commissioners, service users, carers, academics and students.
