Olympic torch to light up Walsall

12/11/2010

The Walsall Campus is hosting the ‘Flames: Lighting the Way’ event on Tuesday, 16 November 2010. The event will provide free training about healthy living to University students and college staff who provide physical activity sessions.

The Flames programme uses the Olympic and Paralympic values to support the delivery of health based physical activity sessions to children and young people within schools and the community.

The aim is to establish an active legacy for children and young people and enrich learning for young leaders in FE and sixth form colleges.

The University’s Sports Department is hosting the event for the region’s college staff and the British Heart Foundation will deliver the training. Participants will be trained to deliver a range of sporting activities including relays, agility games, and skipping. They will also learn how to embed the Olympic values in the delivery of their programmes.

Participants will also get the chance to see the 1948 Olympic relay torch.

Hannah Dingley, Senior Lecturer at the University, said: “We are delighted to be hosting this event and to be involved in the Flames programme in the run up to the 2012 Olympics Games. We hope everyone who comes along will gain inspiration and ideas from the event.”
