Design awards for innovative packaging ideas

24/05/2010

It is the second year in a row that School of Art & Design students have been successful at the International StarPack Awards.

This year Lisa Woodland, who is studying a BA (Hons) Graphic Communication, won a Bronze award for her entry in the category of ‘Corrugated in the 21st Century - a new packaging concept/Cosmetics’. The brief required entrants to come up with a new packaging idea using corrugated board in a new and innovative way.

Students were able to choose to use an existing brand or create their own and 23-year-old Lisa chose to design a new packaging concept for refillable cosmetics. Lisa developed her own brand, making use of the flexibility and versatility of the material.

The judges felt her design structure and graphics fully supported and enhanced the brand, improving the marketability of the product. Lisa has been asked by StarPack to enter her work for the WorldStar awards, which will be held in China this year.

Fellow Second Year student Filippos Filippou, from Paphos in Cyprus, won a Commendation for the same brief but under the category of 'innovative concept'.

Filippos chose to work on a new concept for supermarket carriers. His design combined environmental awareness and ease of recyclability with minimal use of materials and being fit for purpose. Filippos was advised by the StarPack judges to copyright his design.

Julia Chidley, Senior Lecturer in Graphic Communication, said: "All the Graphics staff are very proud of these two students, particularly as they won awards in the most challenging section of the competition requiring innovative and environmentally aware design toward the future."

The award ceremony at the Boilerhouse in Grantham was organised by The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and The Packaging Society. The judging criteria included creativity and innovation, originality, fit for purpose, brand awareness, graphics, information typographics, environmental, 3d model, consumer target and retail appeal.
