University of Wolverhampton supports Universities Week 2010

14/06/2010

Members of the public will be able to find out more about the University if they log on to themed chats taking place all week from today (MON).

This is part of a nationwide campaign, which will see over 100 universities and linked organisations highlighting the essential role that universities play in sustaining our society, culture and economy.

Ashar Ehsan, Director of Marketing and Communications at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “We hope that the people will join us to explore what our students, researchers and staff are working on.

“We are extremely proud of the value the University of Wolverhampton adds to the region’s culture and economy; not only do our staff and students generate world-leading research, but we also assist businesses in the area to deliver solutions and train members of the workforce.”

The online chats will cover various topics from business, teaching and learning and research to arts, culture and sport. They will take place from 12.30 - 1.30pm Mon-Fri this week. To log on and find out more see www.wlv.ac.uk/bigidea.

Nicola Dandridge, Chief Executive, Universities UK, said: “Our universities are so much more than the teaching institutions for which they are often only recognised. For the first time we’ve brought all of the country’s higher education achievements under one single banner, to highlight what else our universities have to offer on a local and national level.

“We have such a strong story to tell in the UK about our world-class universities and how they make such a major contribution to so many different areas of our lives.

“Quite apart from the transformative effect of higher education on students, our universities are an integral part of society – from the training of teachers, doctors and sports professionals; to the development of future fuels, groundbreaking medicines, new technologies, or improved nutrition.”

Universities Week is running from 14-20 June 2010, throughout the UK. With other activities taking place throughout June, Universities Week is the most comprehensive festival of our universities that we’ve ever seen.
