New Link with Staffordshire Police

The BSc (Hons) Policing provides a solid foundation for a career in the force or related professions through academic study and a work placement.

Chief Constable of Staffordshire Police, Michael Cunningham, and Professor Ian Oakes, Pro Vice-Chancellor Research and Enterprise at the University, will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at Staffordshire Police Headquarters on Tuesday, June 15 2010.

The agreement means students on the policing degree will have the opportunity to gain experience as Special Constables in Staffordshire Police. This significant development builds upon the existing partnerships established by the University of Wolverhampton with West Midlands Police, West Mercia Police, the British Transport Police, the Royal Military Police and Territorial Army which allow students to undertake work placements with them.

Professor Oakes said: “We are delighted to be further developing our links with the emergency services in the region through this new agreement with Staffordshire Police. Our Policing degree is a popular course and offers an excellent route into this challenging career.”

Staffordshire’s Chief Constable Mike Cunningham said: “We are really pleased to be signing this new agreement with the University of Wolverhampton. It will provide invaluable experience for aspiring police officers and should serve the force well in terms of developing future recruits.

“I look forward to what promises to be a very fruitful partnership between our organisations.”

The BSc (Hons) Policing is one of few available in the UK and was developed with the support of the National Policing Improvement Agency.

The course draws on expertise from across the University. Students are taught law and criminology at the School of Law, Social Sciences and Communications, mental health concepts at the School of Health and Wellbeing, management and leadership skills at the University of Wolverhampton Business School and forensic science using the School of Applied Sciences state-of-the-art labs.

In their final year, students complete a research project based around their minimum two years of Special Constabulary service.

The University will also be offering a BSc (Hons) Fire and Rescue from September, in partnership with West Midlands Fire Service.
