Youngsters get ready for their new Academies

Year 6 pupils who will join the North East Wolverhampton Academy and South Wolverhampton and Bilston Academy are preparing for the transition to their new school by taking part in an exciting two-day programme.

The programme is designed to help them find out about the Academy and know what to expect when they make the move from primary to secondary education.

Pupils heading to the South Wolverhampton and Bilston Academy will take part in an event on Wednesday 7 July and Thursday 8 July 2010. A similar event for North East Wolverhampton Academy students was held on Tuesday, June 29 and Wednesday, June 30 2010.

Lisa Gough, Operations Coordinator from the University, said: “By engaging in fun team-working activities they will have a chance to mix with children from the other sites, make new friends and develop confidence and communication skills that will stand them in good stead for their futures.”

The first day of the programmeis split between the campuses of each Academy, with a welcome from the Principal and a chance to meet older Academy students.

Day two sees the students visit the Compton Campus of one of the sponsors, the University of Wolverhampton. Here pupils get involved in different fun learning activities such as Japanese, Spanish and Dance, to give them a light introduction to University and excite them in their new learning opportunities.

The Academies are sponsored by the City of Wolverhampton College, the University of Wolverhampton and Wolverhampton City Council.

The North East Wolverhampton Academy is set to open on the existing sites of The Northicote School and Pendeford Business and Enterprise College in September 2010.

The South Wolverhampton and Bilston Academy will relocate to a brand new state-of-the-art school in Bilston by September 2012.
