Pupils help create educational computer games

26/07/2010

The BA (Hons) Digital Media students have been working with staff and pupils at Shelfield Academy, in Pelsall, Walsall, through the University’s Institute of Gaming & Animation (IGA).

The students and their teachers came up with the ideas for the educational games, and the University’s School of Art & Design students created the games.

Twelve web based games were developed over a semester long module, covering a range of subject areas including history and religion. At the same time, the Institute of Gaming & Animation also sponsored a competition, where the developers of the best three games received vouchers totalling £500.

Following judging by the Academy and IGA, the final winner was Matthew Clark with MuckUp, a World War 2 themed history game, and two joint second place winners, Wacky Witch High by Nicole Simms, a History of the Titanic Themed application, and Roman Soldier Bathhouse by Petra Kravos.

Dr Stuart Slater, Director of the Institute of Gaming & Animation, worked with Lisa Barton at Shelfield Academy on the project. Stuart said: “The commitment from the Academy’s staff and students along with the Module Team and students at the University, really showed how co-operative working can lead to some outstanding work. Furthermore all 12 games showed some considerable talent and appreciation of developing for a younger audience in an educational context.”
