Taste of Uni life for Dudley pupils

Over 200 pupils from Dudley are visiting the University of Wolverhampton to gain an insight into student life.

The Year 10 and 11 pupils will be taking part in ‘Aspiration Days’ organised by the University and Aimhigher Dudley.

The event will take place on Tuesday, 12 and Wednesday 13 January 2010 at the University’s City Campus. The pupils will be given a tour of the campus, a chance to interview current University students and take part in an interactive workshop in Computing and Web design.

It is the fourth year of the collaboration as part of Aimhigher, a national government programme to raise the aspirations of young people who are capable of going to university but may not have considered it as a real option.

Liz Saunders, Aimhigher Co-ordinator for Dudley, said: “The overwhelming response Aimhigher has enjoyed from Dudley schools wanting to be involved with this event highlights the excellent delivery on the part of the staff and students at the University of Wolverhampton. This wonderful opportunity shows young people exactly how aiming higher can help them achieve their goals and is a great opportunity to explore the wide ranging academic and social offers available.”

Melanie Brown, Higher Education Awareness Officer for Schools and Colleges Liaison at the University, added: “The Aspiration Days are a brilliant chance for pupils to experience university for themselves and decide if it will be an option for their future.”

As a result of a similar event held last year, many of the pupils are now considering university as a real option.

Further information

The Aspiration Days are part of a wider programme of activities, including residential visits to universities and informative guidance about university, for young people in the Black Country organised by Aimhigher.

Schools and Colleges Liaison at the University of Wolverhampton work with local schools and colleges to inform students about the pathways and benefits of going to university, through visits to the University and workshops on courses, UCAS and student finance. Raising awareness of university and student aspirations to achieve is central to their work.
