Crime expert receives book recognition

Dr Kate Moss is the author of Security and Liberty, Restriction by Stealth which has been nominated for the Hart Socio-Legal Book Prize.

The book, published by Palgrave Macmillan, provides an overview of some of the ways in which citizens are criminalized by legislation and gives examples of essential civil liberties which have been restricted.

Kate, a Reader in Law at the School of Law, Social Sciences and Communications, said: “I am very pleased to have been nominated, both for myself and for the University. I would not have been able to complete this book without the support of my colleagues. I hope it will encourage more people to read the book and will raise awareness of the dynamic and interesting research that is being carried out at the University of Wolverhampton.

“The book aims to generate new insights on crime reduction, such as whether legislating to reduce crime is really a good idea, or are there better ways of doing it and if so, what are these and why are they better?”

The Hart Socio-Legal Book Prize is organised by the Socio-Legal Studies Association and aims to recognise outstanding scholarship. The prize-winner will be announced at the Socio Legal Studies Association annual conference which will be held at the University of the West of England, Bristol on March 30 to April 1 2010.
