Student entrepreneurs rise to the challenge

Teams were asked to present their business plan to a panel of judges as part of a student challenge at a Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) employment skills fair.

Students from the University of Wolverhampton and Birmingham City University joined forces to form two teams. The winners were Sam Wright and Jonathan McKay from the University of Wolverhampton and Adam Hardy from Birmingham City University.

The challenge was organised by Hays Recruitment, and the aim was to encourage student interaction and business acumen in a relaxed atmosphere.

The event at the City Campus also included workshops for CV writing and industrial placements. There was also a chance to discuss career progression with representatives from external organisations including Wolverhampton Homes, Thomas Vale, Bullock Construction, Frank Haslam Milan, Lovell Partnership, Carillion, Enterprise, Hays, WMCCE, You Never Can Tell and local best practice clubs.

Paul Hampton, Senior Lecturer and Business Development Manager in the School of Engineering and the Built Environment at the University of Wolverhampton, said: "We were delighted to host this year’s RICS University partnership fair, which was attended by over 200 visitors.

“This year's student challenge was again superbly organised by Hays Recruitment, and enhanced collaborative working through a challenging business activity. Congratulations to all those who took part and to the winning team.”

Mr Hampton also thanked the external exhibitors, internal organisers and Richard Moxon, RICS World Board representative and Professor Ian Oakes, Pro-Vice Chancellor at University of Wolverhampton, for their opening addresses at the event on February 17.
