Student success at conference

The School of Health students took part in a national project and their work was presented at the Positive Choices conference at Edge Hill University. Their work will now be published in the Learning Disability Practice journal.
The RN DipHE in Learning Disability Nursing students are Elaine Thomas, Peter Croghan, Matthew Horton, Adele Peart and Alex Williams. The aim was to provide the students with skills they can re-use and they were tasked with designing clearly written plans for teaching.
Also during the conference, students Laura Freeman, Wendy Broom, Ami Musgrave, Peter Croghan and Karen Holmes presented posters they had designed about working with people with learning disabilities. Peter was awarded second place and Karen took third place in the competition and both were presented with book tokens to further aid their studies.
In addition, the National Network of Learning Disability Nurses recently held a competition to give prospective students the opportunity to attend their conference in Dublin, free of charge. University of Wolverhampton student Joanne Tonkinsonwas awarded with one of the free places, due to her "outstanding" 1500 word essay submission, looking at counselling, abuse and people with learning disabilities.
Steve Neville, Senior Lecturer Learning Disability Nursing, said: “I would like to congratulate the successful students and all of those who attended the conference, who truly represented the University of Wolverhampton in the most professional way.”
Positive Choices is a national network of learning disability nursing students who gather each year to share their own experiences of exceptional practice within the learning disability nursing arena.

The national Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) project was funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for Education (HEFCE) and the students’ work will be published with the support of the University of Nottingham CETL team. The task was to produce re-usable learning outcomes for learning disability education.
