Final year School of Engineering and the Built Environment students were given the task of designing a new garden or parkland product. Two University of Wolverhampton students who have scooped a cash prize for their creative outdoor inventions. And other members are in the image with them.

The winners were Nigel Moore, who designed a smoking shelter, and Alex Reynolds, who came up with ‘Plant-able’ – a planting system for disabled people.

The project was sponsored by local company LM Products, of Oldbury, who generously donated £300 for each winner, and £100 each for the three runners-up.

David Lloyd, Managing Director of LM Products, was one of four people on the judging panel for the competition. He said: “There was a broad range of ideas and inventions from the students, and we were amazed by the quality of the work. As a local company, it is fantastic to get involved with the design talent emerging from the University of Wolverhampton.”

Dr Anthony Felton, module leader, said: “A close working relationship with a local company on a design brief gives the students a chance to work on a ‘live’ project which has proved to be very successful. The solutions to the design brief by the students were excellent.”

The three runners up were: Greg Day, who designed a ‘strike shelter’ to protect trees and provide shelter on golf courses and parkland; Keenan Merckel, who came up with a “multi-sport facility” which provides 3-in-1 sports equipment for youngsters to play football, cricket and basketball and a design of contemporary outdoor and indoor furniture by Jane Pottinger.

The brief was to come with an idea for the company to diversify their product range to include garden/parkland products, including outdoor facilities. The students produced 3D images, drawings and presentation boards of their ideas, which were judged by LM Products. The project is also part of the students’ assessed work.
