The image of the witch that has perpetually been seen within society is that of an old woman with a pointed hat, green skin, broomstick, cauldron and cat. Dr Louise Fenton from the University of Wolverhampton will examine how this stereotype evolved and consider the wide variety of visual representations of the witch within art. Starting with early woodcuts of the 15th century, onto the work of Goya and Durer and through to more contemporary representations including those by Warhol and Hockney. Representations of the witch will be discussed to show that it is far more complex and how she, and sometimes he, has been shown in many forms to be discredited within society or reflect the stereotype. This is a fully illustrated talk to examine the image of the witch in art so come and see how art has interpreted this occult figure across the centuries.

This talk is suitable for 15+ years.
