Karolina Rybicka

MA FINE ART

Karolina Rybicka is working with ideas around cultural Identity and personal histories. Leaving her country of origin when she was a young child left her with fragmented memories that were predominately centred around the tower blocks that had functioned as her early family home. The architectural forms stayed with her and once in England she started to make connections between the tower blocks in Poland and the high-rise buildings that were now part of her new home. The nostalgia and homesickness she experienced as a result informs her practice today, exploring and investigating the spaces and forms that surrounded her in the past alongside those that continue in the present.

Rybicka is an inter-disciplinarian and her practice method focuses on a form of drawing that incorporates various traditional and non-traditional materials. With an emphasis on colour she utilises tape, film, Perspex, foils and permanent markers to combine and collage gestalt vistas that remain somehow familiar despite their fragmented origin.
