Getting Started with Windows 10

If you're being updated to Windows 10 from Windows 7, you'll find some information about getting started here including how to back up your files ahead of your update.

To find out what version of Windows you're running, press the Windows Key + 'R' and type 'winver' in the pop up box. Press enter or 'OK' and you'll see a screen detailing what version of Windows you are currently running.

Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop App (Adobe CCDA)

As part of the Windows 10 upgrade, the University will no longer be supporting Adobe Creative Cloud apps (including Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, and InDesign) downloaded via Apps Anywhere.

Instead, these apps will be downloaded directly to your computer, giving you faster access to the programs, as well as keeping the University compliant with licensing regulations.

To find out how to install the Adobe CCDA, please follow these steps.

Windows 10 Version Update

If you have received a notification that you're due an update, or if you have any questions about the version upgrade across the University, you'll find answers to our FAQs here. If you have any questions, comments, or issues with the update then get in touch with our IT support team.

To check what version of Windows you are running, you can;

  • press the Windows key + 'R' together, type 'winver' in the pop up box, then either enter or 'OK'
  • open the Windows menu and type 'winver' in the search bar

If you're running Windows 10 version 1909 then you are on the latest version of Windows, and do not need an update.

If you're running Windows 10 version 1803 you will need an update to ensure you receive the latest Microsoft security updates.

If you are running Windows 7, you will be contacted soon to arrange an upgrade to Windows 10. In the meantime, see our guidance on preparing for your upgrade.

To make sure you can receive and install the update to the latest version of Windows, please make sure you have checked for any security updates. These will need to be installed before the version update can install.

To check for security updates, open the Windows menu, then Settings, then Update & Security, then Windows Update, and select Check for updates. If there are outstanding security updates, they will appear here to download and install.

In order to receive the update, you must be connected to the VPN. To check if you're connected, check your system tray. This can be found in the bottom right hand corner of your screen - sometimes the icons are hidden, and you will need to click the upward arrow to show them - and check the GlobalProtect VPN icon (a little globe).

If you are connected to the VPN, the Globe icon will have a tick and will show 'Connected' when you hover over the icon.

If you are not connected, the Globe icon will have a red cross and will show 'Disabled' when you hover over the icon.

If you need guidance on accessing the VPN, see our knowledge base article on installing and running the VPN.

The update is a network-friendly 4GB and will complete in the background so should have little to no impact on your internet speed. Please do be mindful of data allowances if you are using a metered connection (such as a mobile connection), as if you have insufficient data then the download will not complete.
