Wolverhampton English Proficiency Examination (WEPE)

The Wolverhampton English Proficiency Examination (WEPE) is used to decide if your level of English is good enough to begin most full-time degree courses at the University of Wolverhampton (see below for course exceptions).

You will be examined in four areas:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Listening
  • Speaking

You will receive a global score (average score of the four areas), and if this is the equivalent of IELTS 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5. in any element, you will be able to progress to your chosen degree, with the exception of some professional related courses such as Nursing, Midwifery, Paramedic Science, Physiotherapy, Teaching or Graduate Employment Based Route leading to Early Years Teacher Status.

Due to the Coronavirus outbreak the WEPE examinations will be cancelled until further notice but if you would like to register your interest, please email ia@wlv.ac.uk and leave your contact details and we will get back to you when the new dates are set. Thank you.

If you fail to reach IELTS 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in any element in the WEPE examination, you may still be able to progress to your degree course by taking one of our Pre-sessional English language courses.

Entry points for our courses depend on your English language level:

  • If you have IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent), you must do at least one pre-sessional course;
  • If you have IELTS 5.0 (or equivalent), you must do two pre-sessional courses.

You are strongly advised to do some English language study preparation before the course begins, especially if you are entering the course at IELTS 5.0.

Please note that you will not normally be able to take the WEPE examination again within two months of your previous test date.

You may also find our other course offerings of interest, all of which help prepare students for degree level study.
