English as a Foreign Language Short Courses

The University of Wolverhampton's International Academy offers the following short courses:

International Academy's Summer School (English short course open to non-university students)

Our Summer School is designed for beginners/elementary English language learners who want to develop their speaking, listening, writing and reading skills with an emphasis on developing practical communication skills. 

The International Academy is situated in the historic Priorslee Hall and offers a unique learning environment and study experience for our international students.  This listed building offers teaching rooms that are bright and welcoming with modern facilities where classes are run by dedicated qualified staff.

Course content: You will receive 12 hours a week of study in an interactive group setting, covering all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. (Max class size: 22)

In addition, you can choose to:
Go on an organised and accompanied weekly trip to some of the U.K.'s major tourist and cultural attractions and undertake 5 hours of study in your option choice of interest:

  • Art and design
  • Broadcasting and the media
  • Professional communications

Professional communications
Interested in improving your career prospects? Learn about different cultures and how best to communicate and develop professional relationships.

Want to work in TV, radio or newspapers?
Sign up to our Broadcasting and Media option, which gives you 5 hours of instruction in the language and vocabulary of the media, and also offers you the chance to visit a real local radio or TV station.

Interested in the culture of the United Kingdom?
Our guided and accompanied cultural excursions offer you a weekly visit to one of our national landmarks: Warwick Castle, London, Liverpool, Cambridge,and Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon are all within easy travelling distance of the International Academy at the  University of Wolverhampton.

Required English level: CEFR B1 or equivalent

Teaching hours: 12 hours a week for the study of English as a Foreign Language

PLUS 5 hours of study in your choice of specialist interest and one full day's accompanied cultural excursion.

Students can commence studying in any week of any course

Accommodation is available on Telford campus in student Halls of Residence where you will find a safe friendly environment and good standard of accommodation, just a short walk from classes.  There you will enjoy:

  • your own private bedroom with en-suite bathroom and WiFi access
  • shared kitchen and living area (with utensils supplied) in which 4-7 students can relax and eat
  • bed linen provided and changed weekly
  • use of the self-laundry facilities
  • outdoor exercise equipment, sports fields and floodlit hard court

Social facilities

Within Priorslee Hall you will find:

  • table tennis and pool tables
  • TV and games consoles
  • tea and coffee facilities

After enrolling, students will receive a card enabling them to access the facilities available to all Wolverhampton students such as the library at the Harrison Learning Centre, the Student Union etc. Students receive 20 hours of tuition per week.

IELTS Preparation course

This specially designed course is ideal for students who want to boost their IELTS score and prepare for the IELTS test (if students wish to sit the British Council IELTS test please note that the test would have to be booked individually at an independent IELTS Test Centre). The IELTS Preparation Course at the International Academy is particularly useful for those who need to achieve the levels needed for university entry in the coming academic year (IELTS 6.0 is the normal requirement for undergraduate courses).

Our staff are experienced in preparing learners for the British Council IELTS test and will familiarise learners with the strategies required to increase their scores in all four components of the test.
