Wolverhampton team chosen for live demo on IBM Global Technology day

15/09/2020

University of Wolverhampton staff and students put Wolverhampton on the map when they took part in a global computer science event recently.

Two members of the University’s School of Mathematics and Computer Science were chosen by IBM to take part in the 24-hour live coding session which will be broadcast around the world.

IBM Z Day is a free global, one day virtual conference on enterprise systems which is open for anyone to join, with a line-up of global thought leaders highlighting industry trends and innovation.

Senior Lecturer in Computer Science, Dr Herb Daly, and second year Computer Science student, Lukas Jaks, took part in different sessions showing students around the world how to get started with IBM Z technologies.

Dr Daly said: “It’s a real honour to be chosen. It’s great to have a platform where we can demonstrate the work we do at the University to a wider audience. We have a very rich curriculum covering lots of interesting technology and we engage a lot with companies. More than that, we encourage our students use Student Union clubs and societies to connect with companies which take them beyond the curriculum.”

Last year University of Wolverhampton was recognised as the top participant in the worldwide IBM Master the Mainframe Competition ahead of 3000 other institutions globally.

Lukas said: “The Computer Science course has opened up a whole new world of study for me, quite literally. It’s really exciting to have taken part in an event which was broadcast around the world.

“In my first year at the University I learned about programming and networking and have taken part in hackathons and been to industry conferences. I’ve met some really amazing people and talked to many companies about opportunities for the future.”
