Thousands to celebrate at graduation

Thousands of students are to don caps and gowns to graduate from the University of Wolverhampton this month.

More than 3,200 students are set to reap the rewards of the hard work at ceremonies at the Grand Theatre.

There will be 16 ceremonies to celebrate students' achievements from Thursday, 12 September to Friday, 20 September 2019.

Among those collecting awards will be Olympic medallist Kristian Thomas, from Wolverhampton, who will be graduating with a First Class BSc (Hons) Strength and Conditioning degree.

Gymnast Kristian Thomas, who won bronze at London 2012, has been studying at the University's Institute of Human Sciences at the Walsall Campus.

He said: "It's very exciting to be graduating after three great years at the University of Wolverhampton. Today is about enjoying all the hard work, whilst thanking the University for its support throughout the degree."

In addition, 14 people are to be recognised with honorary degrees during this September's ceremonies.

They include Mickey Bushell, from Telford, who won gold in the 100m at the 2012 London Paralympics and airship and ballooning pioneer, Mike Kendrick, from Bridgnorth, who formed the Virgin Airship and Balloon Company with Sir Richard Branson in 1988.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Geoff Layer said: "Graduation is a wonderful occasion to celebrate success and we are incredibly proud of each and every one of our 2019 graduates as they enter the next stage of their careers.

"We are also looking forward to welcoming people who have made a significant contribution to their field to join our University family as honorary graduates.

"We hope all of our graduates, their families and friends and the local community enjoy celebrating with us."

All the ceremonies will be live streamed on the University of Wolverhampton YouTube channel.
