The Faculty of Arts'* Lecture Series 2019/20: Centre for Art, Design, Research and Experimentation is pleased to welcome Dr Olga Goriunova, Royal Holloway, University of London on Tuesday 8 October 2019.

'Subject Abstractions in Data-Intensive Culture'

What would it mean, to think that there are some abstract subjects? Not humans that are becoming more and more digitally mediated and dataified, but subjects formed in the computational ensembles out of data, models, and computational operations; and perhaps having a form of connection to people? If these abstract subjects operate by the 'logic of fact', can we think, within 'the logic of fiction', that online personas, aesthetic figures and cultural figurations are also abstract subjects? What would be the relationship between the two orders today? The talk will explore these questions, first focusing on the subject as a logical function and then exploring processes of abstraction in computational infrastructures.

6 - 7:30pm, George Wallis Building, MK045
