The success of arts as rehabilitation will be the topic of a University of Wolverhampton professor's inaugural lecture later this month.

Professor Laura Caulfield will present "Where I am now, I didn’t imagine I could be": Creative approaches to rehabilitation in the criminal justice system.

Professor Caulfield has a background as a psychologist and criminologist and is currently leading research projects for the Ministry of Justice and the Irene Taylor Trust. Her work focuses primarily on rehabilitation in criminal justice and the needs of women in the criminal justice system.

She said there was significant evidence that participation on the arts has a positive impact on well-being, attitudes and behaviours.

"This lecture will explore the history and role of the arts in rehabilitation, discuss current research and criticisms of the existing evidence base, and propose new and robust approaches towards understanding the impact of the arts on rehabilitation in the criminal justice system.

Professor Caulfield will also share recent research findings from a fashion project in a women's prison, and a music project with young people in contact with the Youth Offending Service.

Her lecture will take place on Thursday October 18. There will be refreshments from 4.30pm-5pm in the Forum, Lord Swraj Paul Building, Molineux Street, and the lecture will be held in Mary Seacole Building, Nursery Street, from 5pm-6pm. All are welcome but booking is required and can be done via s.thorne3@wlv.ac.uk.

Professor Caulfield is Professor and Founding Chair of the Institute for Community Research and Development at the University of Wolverhampton
