This November, we shine a spotlight on Movember, a global initiative dedicated to improving men’s health by tackling issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention. With men often facing unique health challenges and barriers to seeking help, Movember aims to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage proactive health measures.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men in the UK, with 1 in 8 men diagnosed in their lifetime. Men over the age of 50, particularly Black men and those with a family history, face higher risks.

Often, prostate cancer develops without obvious symptoms in the early stages, making awareness and early detection critical. If you’re concerned or experiencing symptoms such as urinary issues, consult your GP. For more information, visit Prostate Cancer UK.

Testicular Cancer

Although testicular cancer is less common than other cancers, it primarily affects younger men, especially those in their early 30s. The good news is that it is highly treatable and often curable when detected early.

Symptoms can mimic other testicular conditions, making it essential to know what to look for. Learn more about the signs and when to seek medical advice at Cancer Research UK.

Men’s Mental Health

Mental health is an equally critical aspect of men’s well-being. Stigma often prevents men from speaking up, with 40% of men reporting that they wouldn’t discuss mental health issues, according to a 2015 survey by The Priory.

Signs of mental health struggles can include:

  • Anger, irritability, or mood changes
  • Trouble sleeping or concentrating
  • Increased stress or worry
  • Misuse of alcohol or drugs
  • Physical symptoms without a clear cause

RecogniSing these signs in yourself or others is the first step to seeking help. Explore resources at NHS mental health helplines.
