Spectator Literary Editor to speak at University

The art of clever public speaking will be the focus of a guest lecture by the Literary Editor of the Spectator magazine at the University of Wolverhampton.
Sam Leith will be exploring the history of rhetoric, from the Ancient Greeks to Barack Obama to Donald Trump and beyond, offering a guide on how to be a successful public speaker.
The free public lecture will take place on Monday, 18 March from 1-2pm in room MA030 in the University’s Wulfruna Building.
The event is being organised by George Kassimeris, Professor in Security Studies. He said: “We are obviously delighted to be welcoming the Literary Editor of the Spectator, one of the oldest and most prestigious magazines in the UK. But I am particularly excited at the prospect of Sam’s visit because in his lecture he will go beyond public speaking into communication in general, and is thus very useful and relevant for everyone, particularly for our students and academics.
“Rhetoric is what gives words power. Contrary to popular belief, rhetoric isn't the exclusive preserve of politicians - it’s actually everywhere. It convicts criminals (and then frees them on appeal). It causes governments to rise and fall, best men to be shunned by brides, and people to march with steady purpose towards machine guns.”
Sam Leith is the Literary Editor of the Spectator and the former Literary Editor of the Daily Telegraph.
After the event, Sam Leith will be signing copies of his new book, ‘You Talkin’ To Me? Rhetoric from Aristotle to Obama and Beyond’, at the discounted price of £7. Please bring exact change.
Everyone is welcome at the free event, which is sponsored by the Centre for Historical Research, Faculty of Social Sciences. No booking is required.
