MFA is coming to your University Microsoft 365 apps (email, files) and Canvas

Multifactor authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security when signing into your University email and Canvas. After July, you will be prompted on-screen to set this up using the app, a text or a call.

MFA is really effective at stopping the spread of malicious activity like Phishing and suspicious links to fake websites that are trying to steal your personal data. It is also very common practice now with organisations like banks and social media.

It sends another security step to your phone (tap the app or receive a text/call) after you have signed in using your University ID/email address and password. This ensures that it is you who is signing in and not someone who shouldn’t be.

MFA does not kick in if you are using the University network or have ‘remembered’ MFA on your regular device. It is only triggered if you are using a different device, a new browser or are in a different geographical location. Once you have set up MFA, you can visit the security settings in your University Microsoft account at any point and choose which method you prefer (the app, a text, a call or a personal email).
