New Self-Service Password Reset System… Coming Soon

04/06/2018

Did you know, one of the most frequently received calls to the IT Service Desk is for password resets?  As part of our ongoing commitment to service improvements we’re introducing a new way for staff and students to reset passwords without needing to call the Service Desk.

All you need to do is register your mobile number to the new system.  Then, when you forget your password you’ll be sent a reset code via text message.

Previously, if you forgot your password you would need to either ring the IT Service Desk during core hours, or answer a series of security questions using the old Forefront Identify Manager (FIM) Self-Service Password Reset system.  This system worked OK, but registration took a little while, and you’d be relying on remembering the answers to questions that you may have set-up some time ago.  And let’s face it, if you’ve forgotten your password you may not remember your security answers either.

With the new system you can reset your password at anytime from anywhere in the world, all you need is your registered mobile phone with you. Registration just takes a few moments and it’s really easy to use.

How it works

To Register

When the system goes live you’ll receive an email notifying you to register your mobile phone.  At this point, the old question and answer version of FIM will no longer be available.

If you’re on a University managed machine a pop-up browser will appear when you logon, directing you to the registration webpage. You just need to enter your current password and mobile number into the system.

If you’re on a personal device you can register from the link provided in the email.

You can also visit the IT Services Self Help webpages under IT Account Password to register or update your mobile number at any time.

Reset Password

When you forget your password you can either click on the ‘Forgot your password?’ link from the logon screen on a University managed PC or go to the password reset webpage accessible from the IT Self Help webpages.

You’ll receive a 6 digit code in an SMS text message. Enter this code into the FIM Self-Service Password Reset portal. You’ll then need to enter a new password. Choose something memorable, but different to your previous password.

Is it compulsory?

It’s not compulsory to register for this service, though it is highly recommended.

Rest assured that your personal data is stored securely within the FIM system in compliance with GDPR, and will never be passed onto a 3rd party.

Should you choose to opt out of this service, or you don’t currently have a mobile number, you can prevent the registration pop-up from reappearing by entering ‘0000000000’ into the mobile number field.
