Student Update: Preparing for resits

This update outlines essential guidance for students resitting assessments this term. You'll find information covering:

  • preparing for your assessments
  • academic and wellbeing support
  • library opening times
  • fee charges for mitigated modules.

I know that you will be taking these assessments very seriously, as success in these will enable you to graduate or to progress to the next level of study in September.   I want to remind you that you are not alone. There are teams of people at the University to support you, whether it's academic skills, a study space on campus or your mental health and wellbeing. If in doubt, ask – no question is too small.

Preparing for your assessments

When you are getting ready to submit an assignment or preparing for an exam, you might find it helpful to access support from our Skills for Learning team based in the Library.

Skills for Learning can help you develop new approaches to your studies and assessments. You can access a range of online skills resources, academic skills workshops and book appointments for one-to-one support.

Upcoming sessions

  • Monday 4 July, 2:30pm – 4pm: Introduction to Critical thinking
  • Tuesday 5 July, 9:30am – 11am: Introduction to Academic Writing
  • Tuesday 5 July, 2:30pm to 4 pm: Harvard Referencing
  • Wednesday 6 July, 9:30am – 11am: Introduction to Reflective Writing

If you'd like to speak to someone about your academic skills, you can also use the drop-in service held at all our libraries. There's no need to book – just come along at the following times:

  • Harrison Library at City Campus: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 11 am to 2 pm.
  • Walsall Library: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 11 am to 2 pm.

To book an online appointment at a time that suits you, email: skills@wlv.ac.uk.

Library opening hours

The Harrison Library, Walsall Library and Hutchison Library remain open over the summer, offering a range of services with updated opening hours.

If you're planning to visit a library, please check the library opening times webpage for the latest updates.

Finding and submitting your assignments

The details of all your assessments are now available in your Canvas courses.

If your assessment is to be submitted online, for example, an essay or report, you must submit it to the Canvas portal with a gold star. Please ensure you have also read your responsibilities for submitting work in Canvas.

If it is an in-person or offline assessment, for example, a performance piece or exam, you will find details in Canvas but no upload option.

Once available, you will also see all your marks and feedback within Canvas.

Fee charges for deferred modules

Please be aware that deferring an assessment from the resit submission date by applying for extenuating circumstances can have financial implications.

Students who have deferred more than 40 credits at the end of the academic year will be charged to register on those modules in the following term, per the University’s tuition fee policy.

For example:

If you have 60 credits outstanding at the end of the academic year, you will be registered to study those modules next year. You will be expected to attend teaching and pay the tuition fee.

If you have 40 credits or less outstanding at the end of the academic year, the modules will remain open. You will need to submit an assessment by the agreed deadline but not be required to attend teaching or pay a tuition fee.

If you have any questions or need further advice about the academic regulations for your course, please contact ASK@WLV.

Support

You may find that completing your assessments will challenge you in unexpected ways, especially if you're balancing your studies with work and home commitments. If you feel stressed or anxious, you can find support at the University.

ASK@WLV should be the first point of call to access help and advice, and the easiest way to contact them is by logging a Helpcall in e:Vision. You can also call 01902 518 518, and speak to someone on campus at ASK@WLV helpdesk. Find out more here: www.wlv.ac.uk/ask

All students can access online mental health and wellbeing support 24/7 through Togetherall – an online community monitored by trained professionals. If you need advice or extra help, please check our self-help resources webpage or complete the mental health and wellbeing support registration form.

If you are struggling financially, hardship funding is available, and our Funding team is holding drop-in surgeries on campus in August

Find out more about the student support services available to you here: www.wlv.ac.uk/support.

Thank you, and I wish you all the best in your forthcoming assessments.
