Edward Gorey: Creator of unsettling narratives and creepy characters

Artsfest Online presents a talk with Dr Louise Fenton on author and illustrator Edward Gorey.

Edward Gorey is an American author and illustrator whose work spans the twentieth century. His creepy illustrations and darkly humorous stories located in Victorian and Edwardian settings have unsettling narratives.

Taking place on Tuesday, 2 February from 5 pm, this talk will look at the life and work of this prolific creative whose work includes books, animated title sequences and set designs. Edward Gorey is familiar and yet arguably not widely known. Dr Louise Fenton will introduce the weird and wonderfully macabre world of this enigmatic man in this fully illustrated talk.

Dr Louise Fenton is an academic, writer, illustrator and cultural historian. Following her first degree in Illustration from Wolverhampton Polytechnic Louise has completed an MA in Illustration from the University of Wolverhampton. It was at this time that her interests moved towards the representations of marginalised cultures. She completed a PhD on the Representations of Vodou at the University of Warwick in 2010. Louise is now a senior lecturer in Contextual Studies. Recent research has been focused on the visual culture of witchcraft and curses and Louise is also working on a visual project, ‘Atmospheric Spaces Enchanted Places’.
