Everything is Research: work by the Library Artists in Residence

The work in this exhibition was created by Library Artists in Residence over a three year period.

  • John Renhard
  • Clare Chennells & Niki Gandy
  • Hannah Rollason

The Bessant Gallery: Ground Floor, Wolverhampton School of Art, from 14 February 2022

The Library Artist in Residence initiative has been developed by Faculty Librarian Tom Hicks in collaboration with Dr Simon Harris, Head of Fine Art.

In its broadest terms, the aim of the residency is to encourage students of Fine Art to interact with the University Library. The brief is intentionally open. Artists are free to interact with the book collections, to respond to the architecture and structure of the building or simply to observe human activity within it.

The library residency has another key function – that of exposing students from other disciplines to the working methods of fine artists. Working in a dedicated workspace on the ground floor of the University Library, the artists have developed work in an open plan environment.

This allows students to observe their research processes, initial sketches, works in progress and to view them in the act of creating artworks.
