#NAW2020: Andy builds career foundations with a Degree Apprenticeship

07/02/2020

“The Degree Apprenticeship will help me to boost my career and over the five years the development and progress I’m going to make will lead to a long and successful career in the industry.”

Andy Price, 25 from Perton in Wolverhampton, is studying for a Chartered Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship at the University of Wolverhampton.

Not having a clear idea of what he wanted to do, Andy left school and studied for a degree in Primary Education before becoming an Apprentice at an accountancy firm and then travelling.

He said:  “Sometimes, it’s a bit like trial and error finding a career that suits you.  I realised that Primary Education wasn’t going to be for me and then I dabbled in an apprenticeship before going travelling.

“I had always had an interest in buildings when I was younger – was always drawing and designing buildings so when I managed to get an interview at TSR, it was something that really interested me.”

At TSR, Andy works within different areas of surveying, working with a range of different professionals.

“I hope to eventually find a home in one of the specific areas but, at the moment, I’m enjoying the variety and because I’m in the first year of my Degree Apprenticeship, I’m learning the foundations of building, focusing on topics like sustainability and the structure of houses.

“It’s a brilliant opportunity for me.  TSR is funding my studies and it’s beneficial to both of us. At the end of it they’ll have a qualified Chartered Surveyor and from my point of view I’m fortunate to be able to work at the same time as getting my degree and becoming a Member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors which is recognised globally.”

Andy studies one day a week and the Degree Apprenticeship is a five year programme. He said: “This will help me to boost my career and over the five years the development and progress I’m going to make will lead to a long and successful career in the industry.”
