Our Enterprise and Employability Award is a brand new way for students to gain recognition for their skills and experience. 

Through the award you can also develop and demonstrate new skills to impress employers or to help you plan, set up and run your own business.

About the Award

Employers want more than just your degree; they want evidence that you have a range of skills and qualities that will enable you to be an asset to their organisation right from day one.  We know that many of you are already involved in work, volunteering or community activities which give you these skills and qualities.  This award has been designed to help you gain the recognition you deserve.

The award not only develops your employability skills, but also showcases your enterprising nature.  An aptitude for enterprise is not only key if you wish to start up your own business in the future - it is highly valued by employers too.  They often look for intrapreneurs when recruiting new staff; intrapreneurs are people with the skills of an entrepreneur who can bring these important qualities into the workplace for the benefit of a business.

We are already working with employers to make sure that the award is something they will recognise and value.

What does it involve?

There are 3 levels of the award that you can complete: bronze, silver and gold.

Bronze award

This first level of the award is designed to get you started with thinking about employability and enterprise and to give you an introduction to the tasks included in the silver and gold awards, enabling you to easily progess on to the next level of the award on completion.

To gain the Bronze Award you need to complete a short online course that will include learning materials followed by interactive activities to check your understanding. If you would like to get started click here

Silver Award

To complete the Silver Award you need to complete any 3 out of the 6 tasks listed below. This award will help you begin to develop a portfolio that will act as a useful toolkit for future career planning and job seeking.

Gold Award

To complete the Gold Award you need to complete all 6 of the tasks listed below. On completing the award you wil have built up a comprehensive portfolio that will act as a useful toolkit for future career planning and job seeking.


  1. Work experience: Gain 60 hours of work experience, volunteering or self-employment;
  2. Presentation: Give a short presentation on your skills and career plan or a business pitch;
  3. Written application: Analyse your skills and experience and market them in a high standard written application, such as a CV;
  4. Work related study: Carry out a study on a job, organisation or industry, or write up your business plan;
  5. Career action plan: Produce a careers action plan to help you focus on your next steps;
  6. Skills analysis: Select 3 employability skills and provide evidence of how you have demontrated these with specific examples.

Support available

Whilst completing all levels of the award you can access support from careers advisers, employment, placement and volunteering specialists, and our Enterprise Department.

When do I need to complete the award by?

You can work through the award at your own pace, spreading your work over an academic year or over the University vacation and the first few months of the following semester.

Note: If you are completing the award as part of an accredited module, deadlines will be set by your tutor.
