Intensive Course Program

We deliver our masters programmes in two semesters of taught subject materials, followed by a full-time intensive research project over the summer.

Throughout the taught section of the program, current and advanced topics in Human Identification are taught by forensic scientists and practitioners in comprehensive lecture series. Lecture topics are discussed in seminars and reinforced in practical teaching sessions.

During our methods units, students learn advanced research techniques and topic related professional skills.
Subsequently, students carry out their independent research project (in one of the featured subjects) in collaboration with a member of the Forensic Science department, based upon a comprehensive literature review and project design.

The ten week full-time research project is accompanied by training in scientific writing, project design and oral presentation skills.

Student Services and Guidance

A two week orientation prior to the programme provides assistance and advice for managing the day to day life and familiarisation with the university facilities. The School of Applied Sciences also provides an optional one week transition program for international students. Our student support offices, and nternational Centre provide comprehensive support throughout the entire course of study.

Module Content
Forensic Genetics

DNA analysis methodology. Population genetics. Related statistics and stochastics. Independent study seminars.

Forensic Anthropology Full spectrum of methodology for the Anthropological analysis of skeletal human remains. Morphognostic, metric, histological and molecular analysis. Post mortem decomposition and PMI determination. Osteological practical.
Human Identification from Physical Characteristics Biometric identification methodology. Friction ridge analysis. Facial recognition. Retinal scanning and vein mapping. Individual identifying characteristics (scars, tattoos, etc.). Mass fatality incident identification (Disaster Victim Identification: DVI).
Professional Skills in Forensic Science The Forensic process and its stages. Case files and court reports. Court room skills. Quality control and assurance. Management of mass fatality incidents.
Molecular Genetics and Genomics Molecular Biology – Theory Module. DNA sequencing and cloning. Chromosomal aberrations and analysis. Hereditary diseases, inheritance and diagnostic Gene therapy. Use of internet based tools such as Pubmed and OMIM.
Research Methods Research skills tool kit. Project specific literature review. Experimental design and project planning. Oral presentation. Statistics and experimental problems
Research Project Research-based experimental project (10 weeks). Independent research in collaboration with a supervisor. Presentation of findings in a seminar. Research thesis.

With reference to its structure and combination of key topics, this course is quite unique in the national as well as international market, while being designed to generate a postgraduate level of competence in an important as well as exciting area of Forensic Science.

These fees relate to new entrants only for the academic year indicated for entry onto the course, any subsequent years study may be subject to an annual increase, usually in line with inflation.

2020 Entry

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree at 2.2 or above (BSc or equivalent) in Forensic Science or a related subject including Biosciences (Molecular Biology, Genetics, Human Genetics), Physical Anthropology, Archaeology and Criminalistics.

International Applicants

Your qualifications need to be deemed equivalent to the above entry requirements.

Postgraduate Loan (UK or EU national):

You may be able to get a postgraduate student loan from Student Finance England of up to £11,222 to help pay for a Master’s degree. Applications are made through Student Finance England and more information on the regulations and eligibility criteria can be found at gov.uk or here

EU students applying for the 2020/21 academic year:

The UK Government has confirmed that EU students will continue to be eligible for 'home fee status' for entry in September 2020, and will continue to have access to financial support available via student loans for the duration of their course. Self-funded:

If you are paying for the fees yourself then the fees can be paid in 3 instalments: November, January and April. More information can be found by clicking here.

Your employer, embassy or organisation agrees to pay all or part of your tuition fees; the University will refer to them as your sponsor and will invoice them for the appropriate amount.

We must receive notification of sponsorship in writing as soon as possible, and before enrolment, confirming that the sponsor will pay your tuition fees.


Financial Hardship:

Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.
