What happens on the course?

Our curriculum has been designed to enhance and develop your professional and interpersonal skills to ensure you succeed as an engineer.

For students joining this course in 2025, the first year of study will take place at Telford Campus. The remaining years of the course will be completed at our City (Springfield) Campus.

In Year One, study will focus around mastering the underpinning general engineering modules like engineering mathematics, computer-aided design (CAD) techniques, engineering experimentation, engineering science, a design project, and more specialist aerospace principles. These modules will give you the opportunity to learn a range of engineering topics and provide you with the opportunity to interact with students from other engineering programmes, as well as staff from various engineering disciplines and with diverse experience. You will also gain good knowledge in the use of different 3D CAD software package to create designs of various engineering components. The laboratory and project modules will allow you to utilise your acquired knowledge to build and test a design prototype.

In Year Two, you will extend the knowledge gained in Year One to more specialist modules. You will also work as a team on a design project and learn the role and responsibilities of a professional engineer. At the end of the second year, you are encouraged to undertake a placement year in industry, thereby improving your employment prospects and forming part of your record of professional development as an incorporated or chartered engineer.

In Year Three, highly experienced lecturers who have worked in the aerospace industry and have been engaged in innovative research for many years will share their wealth of experience with you, to further help develop your future career and accomplish your dreams. You will continue to develop your knowledge of SolidWorks, Matlab, and also learn how to use and apply new engineering software to carry out design, modelling, and simulation. Our new wind tunnel facilities will allow you to experimentally test, evaluate, and analyse the performance of various engineering designs under various real-life working conditions.

This is developed further in the MEng degree to include more advanced topics on flight dynamics and control, advanced aircraft propulsion system, CFD and heat transfer, etc. Our four-year Integrated Master’s, MEng Aerospace Engineering, is ideal if you wish to pursue an advanced level of study.

Additional Information

Everything you need to know about this course!

Our Engineering courses share a design that incorporates significant elements of problem- and activity-based learning, and live industrial project work. They have embedded themes of creativity, employability, professional engineering, and sustainability and the environment. All of our courses are designed to meet the latest standards for accreditation as defined by the Engineering Council.

Students studying Engineering courses will have access to new specialist equipment and technology that is at the forefront of engineering developments. This includes:

  • Design and visualisation facility modelled on best-practice in industry
  • Wind tunnels (including a Formula 1 specification rolling road wind tunnel)
  • Engine test facilities,
  • Composites laboratory
  • 3D printing facilities,
  • electronics telecommunications laboratory
  • Metrology laboratory
  • Materials testing laboratory

Our aim is for our graduates to be ready for employment. We provide additional opportunities for students to gain employability skills, with employability workshops and awards as part of the course. In addition, and to further develop employability skills, we offer ‘Club Activities’. These currently include the IMechE Formula Student Activity, the Human Powered Flight Club, the Flight Simulator Club and the Formula Renault 2l Racing Team Club. These are great fun, and the only conditions to entry are that you need to engage and demonstrate commitment.

All Engineering courses are offered from the City Campus. Chemical Engineering is the exception to this, and this is offered at City Campus in Wolverhampton.

You will have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities, such as Aerospace Club and University of Wolverhampton Racing (UWR) team. This gives all the Engineering students the opportunity to participate in the British Model Flying Association (BMFA) Challenge; UAS challenge (University of Wolverhampton Aeronautics – UWA), and IMechE Formula Student Activities.

All these activities provide opportunities for students to build real engineering components and apply industry standards and procedures, which will improve their technical knowledge, teamwork spirit, enhance teaching and learning experience, as well as be beneficial to a student’s CV.

“Since I started my BEng Aerospace Engineering course with the University of Wolverhampton, I have been able to advance my theoretical knowledge. Starting with the basic principles of what makes an aircraft fly and the varying forces applied to that aircraft. Currently in my second year, I can further those skills by partaking in a more focused subject with various systems within aircraft. With this university I was also able to take extracurricular activities, partaking in designing a fuselage for a UAS Drone challenge”. Daniel Copson – BEng Aerospace Engineering with Foundation Year student and UWA Student Design Engineer.

“Aerospace Engineering is an interesting degree to study with many exciting extracurricular activities alongside the course, which students can pursue. For example, the IMechE UAS challenge creates a big learning curve for all those involved, as well as providing opportunities whereby all theoretical knowledge gained from study can be applied to a real-life scenario, taking students from design to manufacture and test flying their UAS. All of this gives students essential experience in working in the aviation industry”. Jake Adams – BEng Aerospace Engineering student and UWA Student team leader.

"I am employed in an aerospace engineering role that I would not have been able to get if it wasn’t for my degree. The modules I learned have given me an insight into the engineering world and provided me with skills necessary to choosing my career path and becoming successful in the future." Oliver Hickman - BEng Aerospace Engineering graduate 2021
