Our BSc (Hons) in Mathematics is much more than a traditional Mathematics degree. With an ever increasing demand for highly numerate and computer literate Mathematics graduates in the workplace we have tailored this programme to provide you with the skills most in demand by employers while still including the rigorous Mathematics content required to go on to further study at MSc and PhD level.

Our programme starts by reinforcing the mathematical foundations you will have studied at previous levels and gradually introduces more advanced and specialised content areas. Just like any other mathematics degree programme you will study traditional subjects such as Algebra and Calculus during every year of the programme. What sets our programme apart is the emphasis placed on the key areas of Mathematical & Statistical Modelling, Operational Research and Statistical Cybermetrics. The expertise and transferrable skills you will receive will leave you well positioned for any career associated with the mathematical sciences.

You will also be given guidance in the use of specialist mathematical, operational research and statistical software such as SPSS, Maple, GPSS, R and GAP. An appreciation of good professional practice and the development of essential employability skills are also embedded in the course.

What happens on the course?

Year 1. You will begin by reinforcing the mathematical foundations learned at previous levels with an emphasis on Calculus, Algebra, Set Theory and Mathematical Proof. You will build on this knowledge by studying Probability & Statistics and Operational Research while gradually being introduced to mathematical and statistical software including Maple, Matlab and R.

Year 2. You will be introduced to more specialised and advanced mathematical topics including Group Theory, Mathematical Analysis, Statistical Modelling, Discrete Mathematics, Operational Research and Mathematical Modelling.

Year 3. This is the year you will spend on placement in industry.  This will help you to develop a range of professional skills sought after by employers.  Our past experience has shown that students who successfully complete a placement year are in an advantageous position in securing relevant professional employment when they complete their degrees.

Year 4. You will be able to choose from a range of topics including Advanced Calculus, Financial Mathematics, Multivariate Statistics with Cybermetrics, Cryptography, Advanced Operational Research, Pure Mathematics and Partial Differential Equations. In addition, you will undertake a final year project, which is a significant piece of independent study supervised by a member of academic staff.

Potential Career Paths

Mathematicians are warmly welcomed in industry, business and commerce for their analytical ability and logical approach to unravelling complex issues. Therefore, graduates can aspire to a wide variety of careers, such as banking, accountancy, actuarial work, operational research, statistics, engineering or computing. With this degree, you could go on to do an MSc or a PhD in a specialist area of mathematics, or study for a PGCE to pursue a career in mathematics teaching and obtain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Additional Information

Everything you need to know about this course!

The Mathematics department includes a team of staff with research pedigree in a number of fields, most notably that of statistical cybermetrics, led by a professor who has been consistently recognised as a leading international authority on the subject for many years.

We pride ourselves on the academic support and guidance given by our friendly and approachable staff.  Students in the department have shown their appreciation for this by the exceptionally high ratings they have given their course in the National Student Survey in recent years.

You will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the essential concepts, principles, theories and techniques relating to mathematics, statistics and operational research.

Using specialist computer software where appropriate, you will be able to model real world situations and apply mathematical, statistical or operational research techniques to develop solutions to practical problems.

You will develop of a range of transferable skills in problem solving, communication, project management, working individually and in teams.
