Why choose this course?

This degree aims to:

  • Develop your skills and knowledge in the main areas of chemistry (organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry) and also enable you to develop a strong awareness of the specialist application of chemistry to pharmaceutical science.  This will encompass the physicochemical nature of drugs, the molecular basis of life, practical pharmaceutical techniques, the principles of drug development and formulation and advanced pharmaceutical formulation.  In addition if you choose to undertake a Sandwich degree then the course will allow you to acquire technical skills in the workplace and enable you to integrate knowledge gained in the theoretical aspects of the course into the professional environment. 
  • Produce a graduate who is “fit for purpose”, who is ready for employment in the chemistry/pharmaceutical or a related industry, or who can progress to teaching, further study or research aspirations.

At each level of the course you will study a core of main pillars of Chemistry (Inorganic, Organic, Physical and Analytical Chemistry together with selected aspects of Pharmaceutical Science.

Potential Career Paths

The UK’s chemical industry is one of the leading industrial contributors to the national economy and there are many opportunities to apply chemical knowledge, principles and skills to a successful career in the chemistry, pharmaceutical science, chemical engineering or other chemistry-related disciplines.  “Chemistry will underpin economic growth, say industry leaders”, it was reported in the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) publication, Chemistry World, on the “Strategy for delivering chemistry-fuelled growth of the UK economy”.  Currently the Chemistry-using industries contribute ~£195bn to the UK economy with approximately £10bn coming from chemical manufacturing and £9bn from pharmaceutical manufacturing. The areas of chemical manufacture, process technology, product development and application, and formulation skills are key areas of these chemical sciences.  In chemicals (including pharmaceuticals) 95.6% of UK companies are SME’s employing 42% of the total workforce and account for 29% of turnover.

  • Chemistry, and related science students, have excellent job prospects or go on to further study and/or research. 
  • Our existing chemistry-related programmes, BSc Biochemistry and BSc Pharmaceutical Science have excellent student satisfaction rates (95% respectively) and we anticipate that our new Chemistry developments will achieve similar results.
  • Our compliment of existing, experienced staff (including several research professors), will expand as the course develops.  We recently moved into our new £25m “state of the art” science facility.  The new laboratory facilities were accompanied by generous investment in a range of new teaching, research and consultancy equipment. 
  • Our chemistry-based subjects have maintained links with several local/regional chemical companies and we’ve had many successful collaborative research and development knowledge transfer programmes (KTP’s), our most recent was independently rated as “outstanding”, the highest grading possible.  We shall continue to build upon our existing and expanding capacity to develop links with local employers.

You will have studied a core of organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry, the pillars of what can be considered to be “the central science” and have an integrated knowledge of these main areas of chemistry together with good practical skills, literacy, numeracy.  You will have a high level of IT skills and be capable of logical, scientific, critical thinking and problem solving.  In addition you will have studied many of the essential concepts of Pharmaceutical Science and will understand much of the principles and language of these sciences at the interface of chemistry.  These skills will make you well equipped for the workplace, be it in a pharmaceutical science, chemistry or chemistry related environment or the wider world of work in general.  You will also be well placed for further study and/or research if you so choose.

2020 Entry

  • 96 UCAS points
  • A Levels - grades CCC / BCD  to include Chemistry with minimum grade C
  • BTEC L3 Extended Diploma or OCR Cambridge L3 Technical Extended Diploma - grades MMM will be considered on an individual basis. Applicants will be expected to have studied at least two Chemistry related modules.
  • Access to Science HE Diploma: 45 L3 credits at Merit to include at least 36 Science credits

Your employer, embassy or organisation can pay for your Tuition fees:

If your employer, embassy or organisation agrees to pay all or part of your tuition fees; the University will refer to them as your sponsor and will invoice them for the appropriate amount.

We must receive notification of sponsorship in writing as soon as possible, and before enrolment, confirming that the sponsor will pay your tuition fees.

Financial Hardship:

Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund. for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.
