The course offers you an insight into an important aspect of human life, religion in its major and diverse forms.

You will explore the ways that the study of religion has developed, and apply methods from the discipline to explore aspects of contemporary religion. This open non-confessional approach explores the major world religions together with minority and diverse expressions.

Our students come from a range of religious and secular backgrounds, so you may find you are discussing topics with people from Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, agnostic and secular viewpoints. Your study will provide a sound foundation in knowledge and understanding of religions, and you will develop the ability to apply theoretical frameworks to develop and present your analysis of topics.

Indicative course content:

Year 1 (Level 4)

You will gain an insight into an important aspect of human life, religion in its major and diverse forms.
You will explore the ways that the study of religion has developed, and apply methods from the discipline to explore aspects of contemporary religion. This open, non-confessional approach explores the major world religions together with minority and diverse expressions.
You will meet fellow students from a range of religious and secular backgrounds, so you may find you are discussing topics with people from Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, agnostic and secular viewpoints. Your study will provide a sound foundation in knowledge and understanding of religions, and you will develop the ability to apply theoretical frameworks to develop and present your analysis of topics.

Modules could include: The Study of Religion; Christianity and the Contemporary World; Hindu Dharma and the Contemporary World; The Holocaust; Introduction to Philosophy; Volunteering in the Community; From Student to Scholar.

Year 2 (Level 5) 

The second year of the course will explore topics such as: New Religious Movements; Sikhi and the Contemporary World; The Idea of Culture; Volunteering in Action; Islam, Muslims and the Contemporary World; Religion and the Arts.

Year 3 (Level 6)

In the final year, you will explore: Media, Religion & Ethics; Atheism and Non Belief; The Buddha, his Dharma and the Contemporary World; Fieldwork in Religious Studies and undertake your Religious Studies Independent Study (Dissertation).

Potential Career Paths

This is an ideal course for students who want to go on to do a teacher training course in Religious Education. The majority of our graduates have taken this path and become successful teachers, with a responsibility for RE in the primary sector or as RE specialists in secondary schools. This specialist course content enables you to cover all the subject knowledge requirements for a Secondary RE PGCE in the areas of world religions and philosophy of religion/ ethics.

In addition the course is based around a Professional Development Award, to enable you to gain this award as part of your degree study. The volunteering opportunities in each year of the course provide experiences of placements in schools, religious organisations and other relevant settings. You are also encouraged to engage in personal development planning, to ensure that you take all opportunities to develop your potential. This covers skills required for learning, accessing and processing information, presentation skills, and working with others.

This development of your language competences to graduate level, together with practical engagement with local religious communities provides a good foundation for employment in the public sector. Social, religious and learning identities are an important aspect of many people’s lives, and possessing an understanding of them is highly relevant to the caring professions, social services, community work, the police, nursing and a wide range of business activities.

The central strand of technology running through the course means that you will be digitally literate and have a good understanding of the design and presentation of materials for different audiences.

The Religious Studies course at the University of Wolverhampton is a well established and resourced course with an innovative and evolving curriculum which includes professional placement opportunities.

The course is innovative in the extensive engagement with the local religious environment in Wolverhampton. Many religious communities are within walking distance of the campus and allow for sessions to link the classroom and community. In each year of the course students have an opportunity for a volunteering placement in a range of settings: a school, a religious based organisation, or another employer.

The course programme covers all areas of subject content specified for Secondary RE trainees and leads to a Professional Development Award, which enables you to develop your profile specifically for a teaching career or a career in the caring professions. The course also includes a unique combination of modules that draw together the contemporary and the historical, the local and the global.

You will be taught by staff with a background in Secondary RE teaching, who are able to link learning to the knowledge and skills required for teaching. Our team of staff have a proven and respected research and publications record.

A successful graduate from this course will be able to demonstrate:

  1. an advanced knowledge of the values and principles of religions and ethics  and a critical approach to these ideas; religions and ethics in a variety of  global and local contexts;
  2. knowledge and understanding of the major world religions, and the ethical dimension within each religion;
  3. employability skills through placements in educational, religious and other relevant settings;
  4. a critical reflection on and evaluation of ethical systems, ethical decision making  and a critical analysis of contemporary ethical issues;
  5. the ability to act on tutor feedback, to develop a range of transferable skills intrinsic to Religious Education and of value in graduate employment;
  6. an ability to identify and employ a range of oral, written and digital resources in the production of advanced scholarly materials.

Other Requirements

Students must have studied a minimum of two years post GCSE level. However, it is expected that some applicants will be mature students with work experience, who wish to further their career development. These applicants will be processed through standard procedures, which may involve an interview as part of the process. Please see http://wlv.ac.uk/mature for further information.

Those who do not meet the entry requirements may be offered an alternative course.

Tuition Fees Loan: If you wish, you can take out a Government Student Loan which covers the full course fee. You pay it back once you’ve left university and your income is more than £25,725 (from April 2019). More information on repayments can be found at: repayments.
It’s available to eligible full-time higher education students and does not depend on family income.

The amount of the Tuition Fees Loan is paid directly to the University of Wolverhampton by the Student Loan Company.
