The Foundation year prepares students for university level study. Successful completion of our Foundation course permits access to any of our Humanities or Media BA (Hons) degree courses, which include English, English Language, Creative Writing, Linguistics, Media, Philosophy and Religious Studies — many of which can be taken singly as specialist degrees or together as ‘joint’ degree routes. The Foundation year begins with modules aimed at providing transferable study skills and then, in the second semester, gives students the opportunity to study more specialist modules, with a focus on various aspects of Humanities and Media.

This integrated degree course in Religious Studies and Philosophy develops graduates who will be able to draw on both disciplines in their exploration and analysis of philosophical and religious issues. Thus critical reasoning developed within Philosophy can be linked to an empathetic appreciation of other religious worldviews. In addition philosophical issues about the body, gender and identity are contextualized within the study of teachings and practices within a range of religious traditions.

Graduates from this course can use this combination as an ideal platform from which to move to a Secondary PGCE in Religious Education. Central to the course is an opportunity for you to develop your full potential, developing the skills for successful study and future employment.

 As well as subject-specific knowledge, graduates will develop a wide range of key transferable skills including enhanced communication, analytical and technological proficiency. The degree encourages individuals to become digitally literate and intellectually curious, with the capacity to work both independently and as part of a wider team to understand, develop and apply solutions to both theoretical and practical problems. Such skills equip our graduates to use their knowledge in enterprising and profitable ways in their chosen careers and develop their roles within the wider community.


What happens on the course?

 The core first year modules lay the foundations for Religious Studies and Philosophy, in an introduction to theoretical and methodological approaches. The ethical strand which runs through the course is introduced in ‘thinking ethically’.

At the heart of the Religious Studies and Philosophy course is the opportunity to study specific religious traditions, Christianity, Sikhism and Islam, along with the Enlightenment - widely regarded as the movement that formed the central institutions and structures of the modern western world. Thus students simultaneously explore theological, philosophical and contemporary themes. Year long modules in ‘Faith communities and Social Policy’, ‘Law, Morality and Society’ and ‘fieldwork’ provide the opportunity to explore religion and philosophy in educational, business, social or community settings. You can also choose to study modules like Freedom, Recognition and Authenticity; Philosophy of Mind; Self and Other; Philosophy of Language.

Through the course of the degree students are encouraged to extend and apply their knowledge in modules which involve them in a range of stimulating activities and processes, leading discussions, presenting and carrying out research, undertaking placements and fieldwork. Digital literacy is demonstrated in the selection and application of appropriate technologies to access, explore and present understandings of philosophical and religious material.

The central strand of technology running through the course means that graduates will be digitally literate and have a good understanding of the design and presentation of materials for different audiences.


This is an ideal course for students who want to go on to a PGCE course. Many graduates have become successful teachers, with a responsibility for RE in the primary sector or as RE specialists in secondary schools. The combination of Religious Studies and Philosophy suitably prepares students for the ethics and/ or philosophy of religion sections in GCSE, AS and A Level syllabi.


The practical engagement with local religious communities provides a good foundation for employment in the public sector. Religion is an important aspect of many people’s lives, understanding religion from a philosophical point of view is highly relevant to the caring professions, social services, community work, the police, nursing and a wide range of business activities.


Besides teaching, graduates with this integrated Joint honours have also taken up careers in IT, local government and media and campaigning, while some have opted for MA and PhD study.

The Religious Studies and Philosophy integrated Joint is innovative in the extensive engagement with the local religious environment in Wolverhampton. Many religious communities are within walking distance of the campus and allow for sessions to link the classroom and community.

The course is ideal preparation if you intend to go into Secondary RE teaching. Staff have recent and relevant experience of teaching in secondary schools and have been involved in local and national developments in Religious Education.The combination of Religious Studies and Philosophy is particularly relevant for students aiming to enter a career in education.

Extensive use is made of a range of up to date technologies to enhance learning experiences. Our Pebble Pad ePortfolio system is central to learning and provides a tool for personal development planning. In addition staff are involved in research on the use of technology in learning, for example using iPods to enhance field visits to places of worship.

You will have the opportunity to listen to internationally renowned scholars through the Royal Institute of Philosophy public lecture series hosted by the University.

Students must have studied a minimum of two years post GCSE level. However, it is expected that some applicants will be mature students with work experience, who wish to further their career development.
