What happens on the course?
Course Modules
You will have the opportunity to study and understand contemporary social issues from different disciplinary perspectives. You will engage with current academic debates about a range of social issues and debate and discuss ideas about the social world that will challenge and extend your thinking. The module will provide an exciting basis for your future study of the Social Sciences.
This module is designed to introduce you to university life. It will support you in exploring the university environment. It will also introduce you to the wide variety of academic skills needed to succeed at university and will support you in the development of these skills.
In this module, you will work collaboratively with other students on a project that reflects an area of shared interest relating to the broad themes of Business, Law or the Social Sciences. You will have the opportunity to work as a small team to devise, design and plan a project relating to a topic of shared interest. In many aspects of life and work, teamwork and collaboration are the norm to solve real world-problems. This group-based project will allow you to develop a range of skills, including leadership skills, time-management, negotiation, communication, creativity, problem-solving and critical thinking skills. By investigating and responding to a complex question, challenge or problem, you and your group will acquire a deeper knowledge of your topic. The module will conclude with a conference, where your group’s project will be presented to the other groups in your class.
This module introduces you to Wolverhampton and the people who live there using concepts and insights from a variety of academic subjects, for example Social Policy, Sociology, History, Criminology and Criminal Justice, Law, and Politics, amongst others. You will explore a range of cultural and social issues.
The module has been designed to maximise student engagement, understanding of the law and promote skills and employability. Students will acquire knowledge in the area of Contract Law and develop practical and employability skills through face-to-face teaching, online activities and collaboration with peers. The learning and teaching approach of the module will give the opportunity for students: • To consolidate information taught and test immediate knowledge retention. • To gain a deeper understanding of legal issues through critical analysis and application of content. • To develop and reflect on the acquisition of legal and employability skills The module may provide students with the opportunity to be awarded digital badges for different skills and employability activities. Badges may be awarded for the completion of tasks and/or for completion of a self-directed series of activities. Once the tasks have been competed students will be awarded a digital badge that can be shared on portfolio websites such as LinkedIn. The module satisfies the requirement of the Bar Standards Board that a qualifying law degree covers the seven foundations of legal knowledge. The module has been designed to maximise student engagement and the understanding of basic legal skills and to promote employability. Students will acquire knowledge and develop key skills in legal research, writing, analysis, and digital literacy (to include GDPR and secure storage of digital documents as appropriate). They will also develop practical and employability skills through face-to-face teaching, online activities and collaboration with peers. The learning and teaching approach of the module will give the opportunity for students: • To consolidate information taught and test immediate knowledge retention. • To develop and reflect on the acquisition of legal and employability skills using Gibbs reflective cycle The module may provide students with the opportunity to be awarded digital badges for different skills and employability activities. Badges may be awarded for the completion of tasks and/or for completion of a self-directed series of activities. Once the tasks have been competed, students will be awarded a digital badge that can be shared on portfolio websites such as LinkedIn. Students will acquire knowledge in the area professional and practical through face-to-face teaching, online activities and completion of a practical activity. On completion of this module students should be able to understand the nature and structure of the different business structures/media (sole traders, partnerships and companies). Students will become familiar with business organisations, and more specifically an understanding of the corporate entity. Students should be able to select an appropriate business medium/structure to meet the client's commercial requirements. Students will be encouraged to communicate effectively to demonstrate knowledge of legal rules and principles. The module may provide students with the opportunity to be awarded digital badges for different skills and employability activities. Badges may be awarded for the completion of tasks and/or for completion of a self-directed series of activities. Once the tasks have been competed students will be awarded a digital badge that can be shared on portfolio websites such as LinkedIn. This module will introduce students to the general principles of criminal law. It will include the study of several substantive criminal offences, highlighting the requirements of each crime according to the offence definition. The module will also consider the existence of defences to crime and when they may apply. Students will be taught how to apply the law to problem scenarios. The role of the criminal justice system in dealing with the accused is also considered.
This module will introduce you the basic principles of Real Property Law in England and Wales and the various rights and interests which can exist in real property, with particular reference to the development of legal and equitable rights and their protection in unregistered and registered land, acquiring title to land, trusts of land and co-ownership, leases and interests in land. This module will pull down barriers to understanding and project a searching and energizing spotlight over the complexities and uncertainties of the property law which will help you understand and apply the legal principles rather than deliver a treatment of the law. This module is designed to maximise student engagement, enhance legal research skills, and promote employability. Students can choose to complete a written research project or a practical law volunteering project providing legal advice, or any other approved placement involving legal practice. The supervised law research project and the volunteering project will both foster digital literacy and academic writing skills. The volunteering project will require a minimum period of engagement, interviewing clients, researching client issues and producing written advice to the client. Both the research project and the volunteering project will include a reflection. The module will provide students with a structured framework for developing research methodologies necessary to advise a client on practical legal issues and carry out academic legal research, develop the ability to critical analyse, and enhance professional writing techniques. The learning and teaching approach of the module will give the opportunity for students: To learn advanced research methodologies and techniques, to understand digital literacy skills for academic and professional contexts, consolidate knowledge of academic writing and critical analysis, develop project management and independent study skills. Students may be awarded digital badges for completing research tasks, which can be showcased on professional platforms like LinkedIn to enhance career prospects.

To develop and reflect on the acquisition of legal and employability skills The module will provide an overview of general employment law matters in the context of the employer employee relationship from recruitment to dismissal. It will introduce the key themes Employers need to be aware of in order to comply with their obligations and act within the law. It will explore current issues from time to time for example dealing with underperformance, absenteeism and related contractual matters within the legal framework. Major topics for example dismissal and discrimination and rights within the workplace will also be covered.

They will develop practical and employability skills through face-to-face teaching, online activities and collaboration with peers. Intellectual property is relevant to all who create or innovate. Students will acquire knowledge in intellectual property law, which regulates the use, creation and protection of creative works and inventions. The module focuses on current issues in this fast-developing area, through a social justice lens, considering the perspectives of multiple stakeholders. The module has been designed to maximise student engagement, understanding of the law and promote research skills and employability. Through face-to-face teaching, online activities, and collaboration with their peers, students will acquire relevant knowledge and develop their research, transferable and employability related skills. The learning and teaching approach of the module will give the opportunity for students: • To consolidate information taught and test immediate knowledge retention. • To gain a deeper understanding of legal issues through critical analysis and application of content. • To develop and critically reflect on the acquisition of research, legal and transferable skills. Students will acquire knowledge in a variety of many overlapping disciplines in the areas of International Migration, Modern Slavery including Human Trafficking, UK Immigration Law, International Refugee Law and UK Asylum Law and develop practical and employability skills through face-to-face teaching, online activities and collaboration with peers. Students will acquire knowledge in the area of the Law of Succession which incorporates the study of Wills, Trusts, Probate and Inheritance Tax rules.
