Chartered Surveyors are highly trained and experienced members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). They are property professionals who provide diverse services and offer impartial, specialist advice on a variety of property related issues. They work in all fields of property and building consultancy.

As a Chartered Surveyor Degree Apprentice, you will be part of an extensive team responsible for the planning, development and valuation of built environment projects. You will develop a wider understanding of built environment processes required to become a built environment professional/practitioner and have the opportunity to progress both professionally and academically.

Through the Degree Apprenticeship programme, you will develop the skills and an appreciation to address a wide range of issues and to lead and work with others in the delivery of successful projects. You will be supported by your employer and a tutor and skills coach on the programme. Course content includes elements of work-based learning, pre-contract studies, on-site construction works, project control and on-site decision making, management and liaison with clients, construction professionals and operatives.

The Apprenticeship offers three pathways which lead to professional status as a Quantity Surveyor, Building Surveyor and Property Management Surveyor (dependent on the pathway chosen). On completion of the Apprenticeship, as a Chartered Surveyor you will act on behalf of clients or employers to provide professional services in the pathway area chosen. In these capacities, your roles will include (but not be limited to):

  • providing professional advice and recommendations to clients relating to land, property or construction
  • managing client instructions from engagement to completion
  • liaising with other professionals
  • negotiating contracts and prices
  • analysing data relating to land, buildings or construction
  • following due diligence in providing advice
  • to clients
  • undertaking detailed inspections of buildings, land or construction
  • analysing information from inspections or visits to buildings, land and construction sites.

How it works

The Chartered Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship has been designed and developed in collaboration with employers and professional bodies; to access it, you will need to be currently employed within the built environment sector. The typical duration for this degree apprenticeship is five years and requires one day of attendance per week (for 24 weeks a year) and studying other days through a work-based learning mode.

The course requires you to complete all modules in order to achieve a successful completion. All modules have to be completed in order to successfully complete the Apprenticeship.

Qualifications

The Degree will incorporate vocational and academic elements. You will achieve a BSc (Hons) Degree in Surveying and be assisted in securing associate or full Chartered Membership of the RICS.

You will receive either the following qualifications depending on the pathway chosen:   

  • BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying
  • BSc (Hons) Surveying
  • BSc (Hons) Property Management and Real Estate 

Fees and funding

For employers with a payroll below £3 million: The Government will pay 95% of the cost of the apprenticeship training and assessment for apprentices of any age, for employers who will not be paying the apprenticeship levy. You may also be eligible for extra employer incentives.

For employers with a payroll above £3 million: Since May 2017 employers are able to use their Apprenticeship Levy contributions towards the cost of the apprenticeship using their digital account. We will agree a payment schedule and discuss funding availability before you start your apprenticeships and ensure the cost to your business is clear upfront.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirement for the Apprenticeship will typically be a minimum of three A-levels at Grade C or higher (or their equivalent) or a Level 3 Apprenticeship in a construction or property related discipline. The final decision on entry requirements is that of your employer. Also, Apprentices without level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the end-point assessment.
