BMus (Hons) Popular Music - Audition process

If your application is successful you will be invited to audition. We understand that this may make you feel nervous but please don't be! We want you to enjoy the experience so we are here to put you at ease and help you to perform to your best.

Here's some more information about the audition process and some tips for the day!

You will need to prepare the following before your audition/interview:

One complete song/piece or two short song extracts in contrasting styles, lasting between 5 minutes.  Backing tracks on CD or from an iPod/ MP3 player are also acceptable.

On the day of your audition you will:

  • Perform on your primary instrument

  • Have the opportunity to learn more about the course in a one-to-one interview

  • Take a tour around our excellent facilities at the Performance Hub

Top Tips:

  • Check the timings and location of your audition. We are based on the Walsall Campus. Ideally arrive at least 15 minutes before your call time.

  • The performance should be either one complete song or two short song extracts in contrasting styles lasting between 4 - 6 minutes.

  • If you are using backing tracks, we support any form of device with bluetooth functionality or a standard headphone (3.5mm) output. Alternatively, you can use a physical CD. Please note that backing tracks supplied on a (USB) memory stick are not supported.

  • PA, amps, keyboards and drum kits are all supplied though you are welcome to bring any additional equipment you need such as pedals and/ or effects. Guitar and Bass players must bring their own lead(s).

We are assessing your ability to:

  • Demonstrate your skill as a performer

  • Communicate musicality and expression rather than pure technical demands

  • Engage confidently in discussions with staff members about future career plans

  • Communicate your passion for music
