Val’s practice and research explores the perceptions that individuals have in relation to their personal and social identities, including self-concept and self-categorisation.  Val is particularly interested in the development of student voice and the spaces within which dialogue occurs between students and teachers.  She has explored the frameworks and layers within and around communities of practice and has a focus on ecological learning systems and the potential for these to be utilized further in student-teacher interactions.
