Sarah Girling has been teaching since 1982 and has experience at secondary level in the UK and Malaysia, in Further Education in Dudley and Wolverhampton and in Primary Teacher Training (as a VSO in Malaysia). She has been at the university since 2010.

She teaches academic English on the Postgraduate and Undergraduate English Language Support programmes at the university, supporting students in the Faculty of Arts and Institute of Education, and also sometimes works with TESOL students.

Outside teaching, she is involved in Shared Reading, where groups read aloud (stories, novels and poetry) and share conversation.  For the last 5 years she has facilitated a weekly group in the community, and has run similar groups for people with dementia in a care home, and open access groups in local libraries in Sandwell. Most recently, there have been two groups at the university Chaplaincy for students and others in the community with English as a Second Language.
