    Healthcare and Paramedic Science

    Paramedic practice

    Paramedic Education

I joined the University of Wolverhampton in 2014 to take on the role of course director for the newly written Diploma of Higher Education in Paramedic Science. Before joining the Institute of Health Professions, I worked for 11 years as a senior lecturer and course director for pre-registration paramedic science courses at Coventry University.

My career in healthcare commenced in 1985 when I first gained employment with the West Midlands Ambulance Service on the non-emergency patient transport side of the organisation. I progressed to become a paramedic in 1992 and then moved into a tutoring role within the Education and Professional Development department of the ambulance service.

I have extensive experience in the field of paramedic practice and have also been proactive in the development of the profession. I have been chair and vice-chair of the College of Paramedics Education Advisory Committee, and a member of the College’s Research and Audit Committee. I was awarded a Fellowship of the College in 2014. In addition, I have been a consultant editor on the Journal of Paramedic Practice since its inception – this journal is the UK’s only peer-reviewed journal for the paramedic profession. I currently edit and write the Spotlight On Research section for the journal, which summarises three relevant research studies into bite-sized chunks.

I am the author of two very successful paramedic text books, The Manual of Clinical Paramedic Procedures, and Sanders Paramedic Textbook, and have contributed chapters to a number of other books.

My research interests focus on paramedic care and paramedic education. The theme of my research is paramedic resuscitation with a current focus on CPR-Induced Consciousness outside the hospital environment. I am also interested in other areas of paramedic clinical practice relating to resuscitation and cardiac monitoring.
