Mumtaz's legal career route commenced with working as a Legal Executive Officer at the Legal Aid Board in the public sector, then as a solicitor in the private sector - in the areas of civil law and litigation, and specialising in personal injury litigation (for claimants). Mumtaz worked in the legal sector and profession for over 10 years prior to joining the University. Mumtaz has expertise in the law on negligence, personal injury litigation and alternative dispute resolution, in particular mediation.

Mumtaz is the founder and Director of the University Legal Advice Centre and was awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Award in 2012 for Curriculum Innovation and Initiative of the Year. She was also instrumental in setting up the Law Student Representation Project with the City of Wolverhampton Welfare Rights Service in 2014 and the Wolverhampton Legal Campions in 2015. The work of the Law Student Representation Project was highly commended and was awarded the Wolverhampton Law Society Award for Community Champion in November 2015 and the Vice Chancellor's Award in 2018 for Curriculum Innovation and Initiative of the Year.

Mumtaz is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and, as such, she has a keen interest in innovation in the curriculum that would enhance students’ academic and employability skills. She has taught overseas, for the University, in Hong Kong and Mauritius. Mumtaz also has extensive experience of postgraduate and professional legal studies course provisions and assessments at other higher education institutions through her external examining activities. She has also served as a governor at a further education college and primary school.
