My background is embedded in early year’s education and care, primarily as a practitioner working in community day care, family support, schools, nursery and playgroups. I have worked at the University of Wolverhampton as a senior lecturer teaching across early childhood studies. I am now Head of Department in Childhood and Family Studies which spans from early years care and education, youth work, family support and community work. My teaching involves working with families with complex needs, youth culture and identity and exploring risk in society.
My research interests are varied and centre on access and participation in higher education, lifelong learning and part time adult education and how this is mediated by social class and gender. I have also explored how blended learning can enhance teaching and learning, social care and families and social inequality in general. I have also have research interests in early childhood education including play, assessment and development.

In association with Professor Iram Siraj-Blatchford and the early year’s team; The published chapter in ‘Team around the Child’ (2007) published by Trentham relates to investigating the perceptions of early years practitioners when adopting a multi-disciplinary approach using a case study of a children’s centre.

Lecturing across all levels of undergraduate programmes in Early Years; this involved teaching, assessment, and curriculum review, the development of teaching and learning resources. I also was responsible for module leadership, personal tutor for students and attended assessment and award boards. I was also responsible for the development of the Foundation degree, including the writing of modules, validation and curriculum evaluation in terms of quality improvement. As part of this I was also required to ensure equality and diversity was embedded into the programme. I also managed the Foundation degree and was responsible for recruitment, marketing, enrolment and the development of sustainable systems in terms of the above areas.
I also managed APEL procedures in line with College systems and assessed APEL claims.

Outline of duties/responsibilities
As I was a student on the final year of my honours degree, I undertook a range of temping roles, both short and long term. I worked in primary schools with different age ranges from reception to year six. This involved assisting the teacher by working with small groups of children across the curriculum and I was required to assess their progress. I was also required to develop teaching and learning resources and communicate with both parents and other professionals within the school. I also worked in full day care provision with children aged 0-5years. This involved assisting nursery practitioners with the planning and delivery of learning activities, both in the indoor and outdoor environment and assessment of progress. Also day to day routine activities, such as caring for the physical needs of the children, communicating with parents, wall displays, health and safety and promoting equality of opportunity for all children.

I was also responsible for mentoring level three students, observing and assessing their practice and providing support and guidance. I was also involved in writing and reviewing policies, including equal opportunities and safeguarding and the development of a curriculum that promoted diversity.
