Professor Robert Newman received his BSc in Physics from the University of Birmingham in 1976, and his PhD in Computer Science from Coventry University in 1998. Professionally, he has extensive experience in both industry and academia. He began his industrial career as an analyst and programmer for Logica VTS Ltd from 1977 to 1981 and later served for three years as Chairman and Technical Director of Whitechapel Computer Works Ltd. and for a further two as Chief Designer and Technical Manager of Aeronautical and Marine Technologies PLC. For most of this period, he also lectured at Queen Mary, University of London.
In the course of his long and varied research career, Robert has successfully secured and delivered research contracts worth in excess of £2M, funded by the European Union and by EPSRC. His work in the field of design systems, to develop IT systems to promote information flows and track required transformations between disparate communities within development processes in the engineering sector, attracted collaboration with such major industry players as Ford, Rolls Royce, Volkswagen, BMW, BAE Systems and EADS.
Latterly he has moved his research focus to pervasive computing, specialising in the system design of distributed intelligent systems and their application within very large wireless intelligent sensor networks. He was the proposal co-ordinator and the principal investigator for the ICT-PSP project ‘RFID from Farm to Fork (RFID-F2F) which used a combination of sensor networks and RFID to provide end-to-end traceability in the food supply chain.
