Dr Mary Garvey started her professional career as the first computer programmer for the School of Computing and IT (SCIT), working on an AECAL (Audio Enhanced Computer Aided Learning) package for a BBC Micro and later on a timetable system for the school. As this was a temporary post, on completion she moved to the Computer Centre as a systems programmer and later became a Deputy Computer Manager at Dudley Health Authority.
During this time Dr Garvey also started teaching on database modules part-time, eventually leading her to move into a full time post at the University, where she has now been for over 25 years, teaching primarily all levels of database modules, but also systems analysis and web programming.
On becoming a full-time lecture Dr Garvey started a PhD in the area of Object Oriented database for Geographic modelling and was awarded a PhD in 2005.
Dr Garvey has had a variety of roles during her academic career and is currently the School of Mathematics and Computer Science Awards Manager.
